The interjection hello can be used in informal conversations to express surprise, evaluation, reproach, and mark obvious propositions, with some related functions and semantic overlap.

In previous research, the English interjection hello has been described as a greeting or as a call for attention (a ‘summons’). However, in informal spoken conversation, it has a range of other pragmatic functions that have not been accounted for. This article describes these functions as they are manifested in a corpus of televised talk shows. Using a conversation analytic methodology, we account for the sequential characteristics and the pragmatic meanings of the interjection beyond those of greeting and summons. We show that it may be used to express surprise or positive evaluation, to reproach someone for some misconduct, and to evaluate a state of affairs negatively. It may also mark a proposition as obvious. In many of the instances, the interjection is produced with one of two characteristic emphatic intonation contours. The article also discusses the semantic relationships between the different usages and meanings of the interjection. • The interjection hello may be used as a reproach for misconduct. • As An affective marker, it may express surprise and positive or negative evaluation. • As An epistemic marker, it may mark a proposition as either obvious or unexpected. • Some of the functions are related and have some degree of semantic overlap.

The 'Hello Bundle' intervention, consisting of posters, emails, and huddles, can potentially reduce burnout among ICU healthcare professionals by fostering positive social interactions and a supportive work environment.

Background: Mental health symptoms among healthcare professionals (HCP) in intensive care units (ICUs) are a significant concern affecting both HCP well-being and patient care outcomes. Cross-sectional studies among members of the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine (ESICM) report up to 50% burnout rates. Determinants of burnout include communication, team cohesion, psychological support, and well-being promotion. We designed the 'Hello Bundle' intervention to mitigate burnout among ICU-HCPs by fostering positive social interactions and a supportive work environment. This justification synthesizes evidence from social psychology, positive psychology, and healthcare communication research to support the intervention. The 'Hello Bundle' aims to enhance interpersonal relationships, improve team cohesion, and reduce burnout rates. The six components include: Hello campaign posters, email reminders, integrating greetings in morning huddles, hello jars, lead-by-example initiatives, and a daily updated hello board in each ICU. This protocol describes a cluster randomized controlled trial to evaluate the effectiveness of the intervention. Methods: This protocol describes a cluster randomized controlled trial (RCT) conducted among ESICM-affiliated ICUs, consisting of at least 73 clusters with in average of 50 respondents per cluster, totaling approximately 7300 participants. Intervention clusters will implement the 6-component Hello Bundle between October 14 and November 10, 2024, while control clusters will be wait-listed to receive the intervention in January 2025 after the RCT concludes. Clusters will be matched based on ICU size (fewer or more than 20 beds), region, and average 2023 mortality. The primary outcome is the proportion of HCPs with burnout between intervention and control clusters at the end of the intervention. Secondary outcomes include comparing the following between clusters: (1) number of HCPs with high emotional exhaustion; (2) number with high depersonalization; (3) number with loss of accomplishment; (4) perception of ethical climate (5) satisfaction at work (VAS); (6) professional conflicts; (7) intention to leave the ICU (VAS); (8) patient-centered care rating; (9) family-centered care rating. The last secondary outcome is the comparison of burnout rates before and after the intervention in the intervention cluster. Outcomes will be based on HCP reports collected within four weeks before and after the intervention. Discussion: This is the first large trial of healthcare communication, social, and positive psychology intervention among ICU-HCPs. It holds the potential to provide valuable insights into effective strategies for addressing burnout in ICU settings, ultimately benefiting both HCPs and patients. Trial registration: This trial was registered on ClinicalTrials.Gov on June 18, 2024. Registration: NCT06453616. © 2024. The Author(s).

AI-Hello, based on reinforcement learning algorithms, reduces energy consumption and bandwidth wastage in FANETs using unmanned aerial vehicles, improving network performance.

The routing mechanisms in flying ad-hoc networks (FANETs) using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have been a challenging issue for many reasons, such as its high speed and different directions of use. In FANETs, the routing protocols send hello messages periodically for the maintenance of routes. However, the hello messages that are sent in the network increase the bandwidth wastage on some occasions and the excessive number of hello messages can also cause the problem of energy loss. Scarce works deal with the problem of excessive hello messages in dynamic UAVs scenarios, and treat several other problems, such as bandwidth and energy wastage simultaneously. Generally, the existing solutions configure the hello interval to an excessive long or short time period originating delay in neighbors discovery. Thus, a self-acting approach is necessary for calculating the exact number of hello messages with the aim to reduce the bandwidth wastage of the network and the energy loss; this approach needs to be low complex in terms of computational resource consumption. In order to solve this problem, an intelligent Hello dissemination model, AI-Hello, based on reinforcement learning algorithms, that adapts the hello message interval scheme is proposed to produce a dense reward structure, and facilitating the network learning. Experimental results, considering FANET dynamic scenarios of high speed range with 40 UAVs, show that the proposed method implemented in two widely adopted routing protocols (AODV and OLSR) saved 30.86% and 27.57% of the energy consumption in comparison to the original AODV and OLSR protocols, respectively. Furthermore, our proposal reached better network performance results in relation to the state-of-the-art methods that are implemented in the same protocols, considering parameters, such as routing overhead, packet delivery ratio, throughput and delay.

The novel "Hello" by Tere Liye presents strong, independent women who fight gender stereotypes and build self-awareness, promoting feminist values relevant to modern women's struggles.

The novel “Hello” by Tere Liye is one of the literary works that presents a representation of strong, brave, and independent women amidst the dominance of patriarchal culture. Women in this novel are depicted as being able to fight gender stereotypes and build self-awareness as free individuals. This study aims to describe the values of feminism reflected in the character of strong women through the perspective of Simone de Beauvoir's existentialist feminist theory. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method with content analysis techniques that focus on the dialogue, actions, and narratives of the main characters in the novel “Hello”. Data were obtained through intensive reading and recording of relevant data based on the theory of existentialist feminism. The results of the study show that the character Ana as the main character represents a strong woman who refuses to be the Other as stated by Simone de Beauvoir. This is shown through Ana's brave attitude in facing social pressure, her courage to make decisions without relying on others, and her efforts to build her freedom and existence as a woman. The conclusion of this study confirms that the novel “Hello” not only presents empowered female characters, but also voices feminist values that are relevant to women's struggles in modern society.

The proposed energy efficient hello (EE-Hello) adaptive routing protocol for UAVs can save about 25% of energy by suppressing unnecessary hello messages without affecting network throughput.

With the recent advances in unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), the development of energy-efficient networking technology for mission-oriented multiple cooperative UAVs has become crucial. Routing in flying ad-hoc networks (FANETs) with UAVs is a challenging issue because of the high speed and sudden changes in direction of UAVs. Traditional routing protocols in FANETs periodically send hello messages for the establishment and maintenance of the routes. However, sending hello messages periodically after a fixed interval increases bandwidth wastage when the hello interval is excessively short or causes long delays in neighbour discovery when the hello interval is overly long. Moreover, several disconnected UAV groups have been observed in which the group members are connected among themselves but detached from the main network. By exchanging excessive hello messages inside the group, the UAVs maintain an unnecessary neighbourhood, causing wastage of energy. However, FANETs have certain advantages, such as knowledge about mission-related information. To solve the problem of unnecessary energy drain, we propose a novel adaptive hello interval scheme—energy efficient hello (EE-Hello)—based on available mission-related information, such as the volume of the allowed airspace, number of UAVs, UAV transmission range, and UAV speed. We present a method to decide the distance that a UAV needs to travel before sending a hello message. We also specify a technique to determine the number of UAVs necessary to achieve specific network requirements, such as packet delivery ratio or throughput, with the expenditure of minimum energy. We show that the proposed EE-Hello can save about 25% of the energy currently used, by suppressing unnecessary hello messages without degrading the overall network throughput.

Saying hello to patients: there is no “one size fits all” approach

Saying "hello" to patients can be a simple and brief gesture, but it should be individualized for each patient and healthcare professional.

Launer makes a good point about the benefit of acknowledging patients with a simple “hello.” 1 There is no doubt that an unexpected greeting can make the recipient smile and feel recognised and that human interaction also gives the person saying hello a boost. This is becoming increasingly relevant in the modernworld,wherepeoplecanwalkaroundimmersedintheirphonesinthepseudo-worldofsocialmedia. Insularbehaviourandwarinessofstrangersarealsoincreasing;inpublicplaceslikebuses, trains, and tubes, itisnotuncommonforpeopletoavoideyecontactorconversation. There might be an association between our overall happiness and our attitude towards strangers. But some people are introverted in nature, and others might be neurodivergent—both are represented in healthcare professionals—and might find it harder to be so interactive. I do not believe in a “one size fits all” approach or in pretending to be friendly. There would also be the danger of affected pseudo-niceties as in the “Have agoodday”thatAmericanfastfoodserversoftensaytoeverycustomer.Inbusywaitingareas, saying“hello” to every patient in a rapid way might resemble a scene from Monty Python and not feel genuine. A better approach is to consciously smile and make eye contact with patients, and when it feels right, say “hello” or nod your head or make a friendly comment to break the ice. This could result in some feel good changes in the giver. Patients, their families, and other staff members are just like us—most have families, troubles, fears, likes, and dislikes. Patients and their relatives attending hospital might have worries and feel vulnerable. They might be grateful if we are the first one to reach out, albeit with a simple and brief gesture. Competing

Listeners form personality impressions of unfamiliar speakers based on their vocal acoustics, with a two-dimensional'social voice space' guiding ratings.

On hearing a novel voice, listeners readily form personality impressions of that speaker. Accurate or not, these impressions are known to affect subsequent interactions; yet the underlying psychological and acoustical bases remain poorly understood. Furthermore, hitherto studies have focussed on extended speech as opposed to analysing the instantaneous impressions we obtain from first experience. In this paper, through a mass online rating experiment, 320 participants rated 64 sub-second vocal utterances of the word 'hello' on one of 10 personality traits. We show that: (1) personality judgements of brief utterances from unfamiliar speakers are consistent across listeners; (2) a two-dimensional 'social voice space' with axes mapping Valence (Trust, Likeability) and Dominance, each driven by differing combinations of vocal acoustics, adequately summarises ratings in both male and female voices; and (3) a positive combination of Valence and Dominance results in increased perceived male vocal Attractiveness, whereas perceived female vocal Attractiveness is largely controlled by increasing Valence. Results are discussed in relation to the rapid evaluation of personality and, in turn, the intent of others, as being driven by survival mechanisms via approach or avoidance behaviours. These findings provide empirical bases for predicting personality impressions from acoustical analyses of short utterances and for generating desired personality impressions in artificial voices.

The Vehicular Adaptive Neighbour discovery Protocol (VANP) optimizes HELLO message frequency in vehicular networks, reducing bandwidth and energy while maintaining neighbor discovery quality.

In vehicular networks, the update of car Firmware Over The Air (FOTA) is becoming a challenging issue and it mainly relies on topology discovery of neighbouring nodes. Topology discovery in mobile wireless networks is usually done by using HELLO messages. Due to mobility, topology changes occur frequently and must be quickly discovered to avoid routing failures. Since the optimal HELLO frequency depends on parameters that are subject to changes (e.g., speed of nodes, density of nodes), it must be dynamically adjusted to obtain the best trade-off between the network load and the freshness of routing tables. Existing solutions assume random mobility, constant node density and average speed, which do not hold in vehicular networks because vehicles follow specific trajectory patterns (the roads) and density and speed evolve as a function of time (rush hour vs non-rush hour) and area (urban, rural, highway). In this paper, we first draw the specific features of a vehicular network at different times and spaces by analysing real datasets and then propose a dynamic neighbour discovery protocol, Vehicular Adaptive Neighbour discovery Protocol (VANP). VANP is a fully-distributed protocol that sends beacons at an optimal frequency without knowing it a priori. The objective is to reduce the frequency at which HELLO messages are sent to save bandwidth and energy while still preserving the quality of the neighbour discovery. Through extensive simulations run on real datasets, we show that the optimal HELLO frequency can be reached by maintaining a constant optimal turnover, independent from the speed of the nodes and by aiming at this turnover, nodes automatically use the optimal HELLO frequency. Results show that VANP allows the discovery of relevant neighbours by missing at most two neighbours over all scenarios and reducing the number of HELLO messages up to twice, hence saving bandwidth and energy.

The proposed ECAR scheme effectively reduces end-to-end delay and increases network lifetime in mobile ad hoc networks by optimizing the hello time gap tracking algorithm.

In mobile ad hoc networks, nodes are connected and disconnected regularly; since every mobile node travels autonomously, those nodes are dispersed not uniformly. Connection damage has straight consequences on the network characteristics. For that motivation, various techniques are quick and efficient damage of connection identification using alert packet is difficult for that time to identify next connection in a mobile network. It increases end to end delay and reduces the network lifetime. The present effective connection alteration rate- (ECAR-) based communication scheme depends on the details of neighbouring nodes to survey the connection between the connection alteration rate and the hello time gap in terms of entire transmission rate. Nevertheless, the hello time gap tracking algorithm is constructed to increase transmission rate displaying a stable choice of connection alteration rate, still although node velocity alters. It reduces end to end delay and increases the network lifetime. The hello time gap tracking algorithm is constructed in the network, and it obtains effective connection among unstable mobile nodes. Experimental output indicates that the connection alteration rate in general enhances the hello time gap. It provides the effective connection changing rate for analyzing different metrics which are network lifetime. throughput, and detection efficiency that are improved in the proposed ECAR scheme.

Pragmatic functions of the interjection hello 2025 · Journal of Pragmatics · other

Consensus paper takeaway

The interjection hello can be used in informal conversations to express surprise, evaluation, reproach, and mark obvious propositions, with some related functions and semantic overlap.

Abstract excerpt

• The interjection hello may be used as a …

AI-Hello, based on reinforcement learning algorithms, reduces energy consumption and bandwidth wastage in FANETs using unmanned aerial vehicles, improving network performance.

Abstract excerpt

Thus, a self-acting approach is necessary for calculating the exact number of hello messages with the aim to reduce the bandwidth wastage of the network and the energy loss; this approac…

The proposed energy efficient hello (EE-Hello) adaptive routing protocol for UAVs can save about 25% of energy by suppressing unnecessary hello messages without affecting network throughput.

Abstract excerpt

However, FANETs have certain ad…

The 'Hello Bundle' intervention, consisting of posters, emails, and huddles, can potentially reduce burnout among ICU healthcare professionals by fostering positive social interactions and a supportive work environment.

Abstract excerpt

The six components include: Hello campaign posters, email reminders, integrating greetings in morning huddles, hello jars, lead-by-example initiatives, …

Listeners form personality impressions of unfamiliar speakers based on their vocal acoustics, with a two-dimensional'social voice space' guiding ratings.

Abstract excerpt

On hearing a novel voice, listeners readily form personality impressions of that speaker. Accurate or not, these impressions are known to affect subsequent interactions; yet the underlying psychological and acoustical bases remain poorly understood. Furthermore, hitherto studies have focussed on extended speech as opposed to analysing the instantaneous impressions we obtain from first experience. In this paper, through a mass online rating experiment, 320 participants rated 64 sub-second vocal utterances of the word 'hello' on one of 10 personality traits. We show that: (1) personality judgements of brief utterances from unfamiliar speakers are consistent across listeners; (2) a two-dimensional 'social voice space' with axes mapping Valence (Trust, Likeability) and Dominance, each driven by differing combinations of vocal acoustics, adequately summarises ratings in both male and female voices; and (3) a positive combination of Valence and Dominance results in increased perceived male …

Abstract excerpt

Launer makes a good point about the benefit of acknowledging patients with a simple “hello.” 1 There is no doubt that an unexpected greeting can make the recipient smile and feel recognised and that human interaction also gives the person saying hello a boost. The Vehicular Adaptive Neighbour discovery Protocol (VANP) optimizes HELLO message frequency in vehicular networks, reducing bandwidth and energy while maintaining neighbor discovery quality.

Abstract excerpt

In this paper, we first draw the specific features of a vehicular network at diffe…

Agreements / Disagreements

Agreement between AI models is not independent verification.

Agreements
  • All agents agree the input is a greeting lacking a research question and respond by soliciting a specific topic.
  • Multiple papers use "hello" as a technical term for periodic routing messages in ad-hoc networks.
Disagreements
  • Academic sources apply "hello" to divergent domains (pragmatics, ICU intervention, UAV routing, literary style) with no overlap on a unified meaning or recommendation.

Limitations

  • No academic evidence directly answers a non-existent research question; all papers were retrieved via lexical match on the word "hello".
  • Abstract for C4 is truncated; full RCT outcomes are unavailable.
  • 12 additional papers were omitted by context limits after relevance ranking.
  • Literary analyses (C12, C9, C10) are low-citation and from journals without reported SJR quartile.
  • Agent responses (A1-A3) are unverified and not academic literature.
  • A finding was limited because no supplied academic source was attached.

Recommended interpretation

Respond to the greeting by inviting the user to supply a specific research question or topic. The supplied academic evidence on pragmatic, medical, networking, or literary uses of "hello" is irrelevant to any substantive query and should not be treated as responsive. If a real question is later provided, a new evidence-based synthesis would be required.

The user's input is a simple greeting with no substantive research question provided. Academic evidence discusses pragmatic uses of "hello" or unrelated technical/medical applications of the term but does not address the query directly.

The user's message is a greeting rather than a research question · limited

All three agent responses identify the input as a greeting and explicitly request a specific topic or question for research. No academic sources contradict this interpretation.

Supporting sources selected by synthesizer: A1, A2, A3

The interjection hello can serve multiple pragmatic functions beyond greeting or summons · moderate

In informal spoken conversation, hello may express surprise, positive or negative evaluation, reproach for misconduct, or mark a proposition as obvious; some functions have semantic overlap.

Supporting sources selected by synthesizer: C1

A 'Hello Bundle' intervention may reduce burnout among ICU staff · limited

The described cluster RCT protocol tests a multi-component greeting and positive-interaction bundle; effectiveness is not yet reported in the provided evidence.

Supporting sources selected by synthesizer: C4

Adaptive or intelligent hello dissemination can reduce energy use in FANET routing · moderate

Both AI-Hello (reinforcement learning) and EE-Hello (mission-parameter based) schemes suppress unnecessary hello messages, saving 25-31% energy without degrading throughput in UAV simulations.
